This one’s for Russ!

by Darren

Here’s another cuttlefish. This one however, is just a few centimetres across and very beautiful.

It’s a flamboyant cuttlefish, named because of the ripples of colour you can see which it makes when alarmed.  I was fortunate enough to see these several times in Puerto Galera, and had seen them before, but for fellow diver Russ, this particular one was his first, and a painful one at that.

Despite being an experienced diver, Russ had never seen a flamboyant before, but it seemed that everyone else had.  Indeed he joked that he was sceptical they even existed.  When we found this one, it was right by a bed of urchins.  To cut a long story short, Russ got tagged.

He came over afterwards and asked “Was it you that beckoned me over to that flamboyant cuttlefish?”  “Yes it was” I replied.

“Bastard,” he said, with a grin on his face!
