The Don keeps watch

by Darren

When in Porto it’s only polite to sample the local produce and we enjoyed a rainy afternoon doing just that.

We took the opportunity the following morning to visit one of the cellars along the riverfront in Porto – the Sandeman cellar.  We took the general tour, learning  how the Port was produced, viewing the barrels where the alcohol ages and, of course, sampling the produce at the end of the morning.

Throughout the tour, the shadow of the Don loomed large.  The Don was created by a Scottish artist – George Massiot Brown – in 1928 and cuts a dashing figure in his cape and wide brimmed hat.  Sandeman are immensely proud of the Don and wherever you turn in the cellars the Don is watching and making sure that all is well with his produce!
