The also-rans: Snooze time

As ‘Big Cat Day’ draws to a close, here’s a male lion. Of course we’re sleepy but in Kenya it’s now dark and he’s no doubt roaming around looking for food, but in the middle of the day there’s nothing better than a nap.

The middle of the day is also when tourists go back to camp but I like to stay out and see what’s happening. I was fortunate on this day to have my picnic lunch just a few metres away from this fellow resting, apart from the few seconds every few minutes when he lifted his head and had a look at what was going on.

He had reason to rest. Earlier that morning we’d seen him devouring a wildebeest while the ladies of the pride (who had probably ‘shopped’ for the food) watched and waited for their turn. It’s a good life!
