The also-rans: And the boat came in
by Darren

The end of the day in Barbados and a catamaran comes in to the shore. A little girl is waiting up on the balcony for her Father and Brother. A man waits on the beach for his family who have been out for the afternoon on the Caribbean Sea.
She can wait no longer. The little girl runs down to the beach and stand by the man, who points at the boat. The photographer points the camera at the sky, locks the exposure for the brightest point, frames the image and releases the shutter.
A lot of this image is luck. I only saw it when I was about to walk back up the steps. It does show the importance of knowing your equipment. Often there is only a matter of seconds to capture an image and you’ve got to be able to set it up instinctively.
The way to make sure you know every button and switch is to use your camera. And as this Bank Holiday draws to a close, I hope you’ve had a chance today to do just that. If you have, I’d love to see your pictures if you’d like to post a link in the comments.

Wow, nice shot. I really like the use of negative space at the bottom.
I went to a national park near Montreal yesterday to take some pictures of wildlife and to try out my new photo backpack (a Revolution 360 — expensive, but worth every dollar). I put my shots here: http://is.gd/2KjiD

I hoped to get a picture of a heron, but the only one I saw was too far away for my 70-300mm.
Nice pictures Pag. Thanks for sharing them. Is that a wasp spider? We get those here too – the stripes make great contrast for photographs.
Good pics of the deer too – they’re always a terribly difficult subject to photograph.
