Old man river

by Darren

I love the way this grey heron looks like an old man with a big bushy beard.  He’s proud of it isn’t he!

I do like watching herons sitting by the waterside.  Sometimes at the London Wetland Centre down the bottom from the hide at the wader scrape you can see a whole bunch of them sitting at intervals around an island, as if they’re old men in their fishing stations, having the occasional natter and watching the world go by.

This one wasn’t part of that group but his long feathers make me think of a very old man’s beard and his open beak is surely a sign that he’s chatting away, putting the world to rights and telling his mates “When I were lad we counted ourselves lucky if we had fish. Fish? We didn’t know the meaning of the word.”
