Not as colourful as the boys

by Darren

In contrast to the colourful male mallard the female is just a little, well, drab…

Instead of vibrant greens and blues she has to make do with a variety of browns, maybe even a touch of beige, except that wonderful flash of blue.  On top of that once she has been impregnated she is left on her own to incubate and hatch the chicks and protect them until they can fend for themselves.

Nature’s just a bit unfair sometimes in favouring one sex over the other.  Just ask a male hyena ….
