Milky white

by Darren

Angolan black and white colobus monkeys are quite distinctively black with little wisps of white on the outside of the face and shoulders, but like grey seal pups, infants are born entirely white.  They start to acquire a black and white coat at 1 month old, which takes about two months to come through.

Seeing the young of any species is always a wonderful experience, but to view the interaction between mother and baby of such  gentle and humble beings is really quite emotional.  I keep saying this but I do remember the moment when pictures I’m really proud of were taken.  I remember standing on the ground while she fed the little one on the roof, then a male (presumably the father) helped her to carry the infant down.

The best thing about wildlife photography is being there.  The memories far outweigh any pride that comes from creating beautiful images.
