Going through the motions

by Darren

We were lucky enough to visit The Vatican last year for Easter and get tickets for both the Good Friday and Easter Sunday services. Even for someone who is ‘non-religious’ the spectacle of both events was amazing from the dozens of red hatted Cardinals streaming into the Basilica for the Friday evening mass to the Pope’s Urbi et Orbi blessing – given in 63 different languages, each one accompanied by a cheer from the crowd from a native speaker of that language.

An event as complex as the celebration of Easter, the most holy Christian festival, is always going to take a lot of preparation. I enjoyed watching these priests being put through their paces before the ceremony. Just because the Pope is infallible doesn’t mean that everyone taking part in the ceremony is, and a little practice is always necessary!
