Changing times

This is a crinoid cuttlefish, or at least I think it is. It’s impossible to identify the exact species of cuttlefish without dissecting it, but from looking at images and comparing species then this is my best guess.
We found it under a rock in Puerto Galera which again is consistent with the species which mainly comes out at night. Cuttlefish change colour constantly when in the presence of other species as a defence mechanism, and it was displaying nicely when we arrived – you can see some of the marvellous colours in the image. You can also see one of it’s eyes.
I’m not quite sure but cuttlefish seem to generate a strange buzz when you see them underwater. It feels special to be near them and to be able to watch them. From conversations some other divers feel this too. I wonder what it is that makes us so thrilled to see these wonderful animals? Perhaps it’s like looking at pictures of humans – we’re captivated by those wonderful eyes?
