Are wildlife photographers obsessed with sex?

by Darren

Looking through my library I’m struck by the number of images I’ve made of creatures mating.  Be they rutting deer, amorous seals, tired lions or baboons in a roadside sex attack, there seems to be a lot going on.  These grasshoppers were on a tree in Tangkoko National Park in Indonesia, thankfully avoiding being the dinner of a nearby Tarsier.

So why the obsession with animal copulation? Is it because of the magic of procreation and the thought of new life? Is it the opportunity to record the ultimate natural behaviour? Or is it because at heart we’re all still 12 years-old and like a good giggle at any mention of sex?

‘Scuse me while I go have another laugh at the funny animals doing what comes naturally!
