A moment of quiet

by Darren

We were lucky enough to spend Easter 2009 at the Vatican – including mass on Friday at St Peter’s Basilica then Easter Sunday in St Peter’s Square.  I’m not religious but it was a moving experience to be in such a holy place at such an important time.  While I was there purely as a tourist there were many people for whom it was a deeply spiritual experience and I felt it was vital to remain respectful.

St Peter’s Basilica is the largest Christian church in the world and can hold up to 60,000 people.  Most of the time the church was full.  This young nun stood out for me because in a hectic environment full of people pushing and shoving and desperate to get to the front of the queue (and that was just the priests) she was perfectly peaceful, lost in her own moment of quiet contemplation.
