A manmade environment?

by Keith Ramsey

Every Friday, Darren invites someone to become ‘Guest Editor’ for the day to choose and discuss three or four images that have not been previously published on the website.  Today’s Guest Editor is Keith Ramsey, a historian who also takes photographs and tries to write.  He is one half of Bristol Research.  Keith has chosen to focus on landscape images.

The apparent wildness of woodlands hides the fact that they are often carefully managed manmade environments, something which brings about problems of its own.
The wood in the picture is very similar to one near my house which was planted in the nineteenth century on the site of an Iron Age hillfort which it is slowly destroying. Clearly, both cannot survive, but how can we decide which should be saved?
